Sum of all credit-card and line-of-credit limits.

Be realistic — this is the biggest factor.

How this calculator works

Credit-scoring models are proprietary, and no calculator can reproduce a real score. What this tool shows is the direction and rough magnitude of the main drivers: your own credit utilisation, the small dip from a new application, the change in account mix, and — by far the largest — whether payments are made on time.

The key fact for co-signers is that a co-signed account is reported on both people's credit files. On-time payments can help; missed payments hurt both people, and the co-signer has no control over the borrower's behaviour.

Assumptions and limits

This is an educational estimate produced entirely in your browser. It is not an offer of credit, an approval, or financial advice, and it does not use your real credit file. Lenders apply their own policy, pricing, and verification.

Frequently asked questions

Does co-signing always hurt my credit?

No. If the loan is paid on time, a co-signed instalment account can be neutral or mildly positive. The risk is asymmetric: a default damages you and you cannot force the borrower to pay.

Will the loan appear on my credit report?

Yes. A co-signed or joint account is generally reported on both the borrower's and the co-signer's credit file.

How long do missed payments stay on my report?

Credit bureaus in Canada generally keep negative payment information for about six to seven years from the date of the missed payment, depending on the province and the bureau.

Can I check my credit report for free?

Yes. Both Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada provide a free copy of your credit report by mail or online, and the FCAC explains how.
